An Interview with Coach Jay at US Chess Online

Today, US Chess (the governing body for organized chess in America) published an interview I did with them, and I'm SO thankful for giving me an opportunity to talk to them. They do fantastic work overseeing chess in the United States and I strongly encourage ALL of my students to join US Chess so they can receive the Chess Life for Kids magazine as well as compete in rated tournaments. PLUS, their membership helps to grow the game--which means more kids getting to be a part of chess--and that's something I care deeply about.

You can find the interview I did here: https://new.uschess.org/news/interview-coach-jay/

And, of course, you can join US Chess here (tell them Coach Jay sent you!): https://new.uschess.org/join-uschess/

And thank you to all the great podcasts who mentioned Coach Jay's Chess Academy!

Yesterday, I began hearing mentions from backers saying they heard about us on a podcast... little did I know, that many of them heard about us on DIFFERENT podcasts, including: The Perpetual Chess Podcast, Department of Parenting, 5by5's DLC, and The Funding Chest.

The Perpetual Chess Podcast (Episode 39)
The Perpetual Chess Podcast (Episode 39)

Perpetual Chess Podcast

It's a few week old now (and I feel terrible for not mentioning it sooner), but Ben Johnson had me on his Perpetual Chess Podcast Episode 39. I can't recommend this podcast more highly and consider it an absolute MUST listen for any chess player, whether serious or casual. He's a great interviewer and I am honored to have been a part of his show!

Department of Parenting Podcast - Episode 146
Department of Parenting Podcast - Episode 146

Department of Parenting

I'll be honest, I don't listen to a lot of podcasts (that's more of Kyle's domain), but when he told me that Christian had mentioned Coach Jay's Chess Academy before Episode 146, I had to check it out... and loved it!

Department of Parenting definitely a funny take on parenting (with a bit of a geekier bent) and it makes me wish that podcasts had been around when my boys were young!

DLC - Episode 201
DLC - Episode 201

DLC

Okay... so this is not the podcast for me since I can't even remember the last time I played a non-chess video game, but Kyle swears that 5by5's DLC podcast is the best of the best when it comes to video game related podcasts--plus, they end every show with a segment called Table Top Time where they talk about board games.

Thanks guys for making Coach Jay's Chess Academy one of your "Picks of the Week" and let me know if you ever need someone to come on and talk about the OG of table top games, let me know!

It's been 35 years, but Blade Runner is suddenly a HUGE deal again--and it happens to be one of our favorite movies (the original... we haven't seen Blade Runner 2049 yet). Of course, part of that might be because it includes a game of chess as a major plot point... which gives me a fantastic opportunity to talk about one of my favorite movies with you!

Chess shows up in all sorts of movies and TV shows--I'm sure Kyle would be happy to tell you about chess in Doctor Who--but it's rarely shows with such authenticity and respect. When creating the game shown in the movie, they pulled one of the most famous games in chess history, known as The Immortal Game, and faithfully recreated it.

The Immortal Game (The Video is Above!)

This is a game that was originally played by played by Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky during a break at the first ever international tournament in 1851 and involves Anderssen sacrificing most of his pieces in a brilliant attack to defeat Kieseritzky! It's an exciting game and I've shown it to THOUSANDS of students over the years--almost all of which were born long after Blade Runner's release in 1982.

ONE WEEK LEFT! Chess in Blade Runner, a livestream for coaches AND the complete History of Chess!
over 6 years ago – Mon, Oct 09, 2017 at 03:33:33 PM

Hey guys, it's Coach Kyle here and thanks again for all your support! We're well past our goal and approaching our first stretch goal, so we can't thank you enough! We wanted to share a quick update with you and let you know about a few things:

  • We're streaming on Kickstarter Live tonight about the chess game in Blade Runner
  • THEN we're doing a live stream on Facebook for chess coaches about Five Habits of a Healthy Chess Club
  • And FINALLY (if you scroll to the bottom) there's a copy of our History of Chess video we streamed last week on Kickstarter Live

Kickstarter Live tonight AND then Facebook Live (for Coaches!)

Tonight at 6:00pm PDT! The story behind the famous Blade Runner scene!
Tonight at 6:00pm PDT! The story behind the famous Blade Runner scene!

Tonight at 6pm PST, Coach Jay will be doing a live stream about... Bladerunner? Well, not exactly, but there IS a chess scene IN Blade Runner that uses the famous "Immortal Game" and Coach Jay will give you the full backstory on this exciting game. The fact that this game was included in one of the most revered science fiction movies of all time immediately makes it one of the best known chess games of all time!

(Sure, the Harry Potter chess game is probably more well known, but that was a game made up just for the movie!)

Following that, we will do a live stream over on our Facebook page to talk about Five Habits of a Healthy Chess Club. Over the past few weeks, we've sure gotten a lot of questions from chess coaches (we've LOVED talking with so many of you!) and this livestream will be a great chance to learn a few tricks and ask Coach Jay questions.

Click on the image below to go to our Facebook page so you can see when we start streaming!

VIDEO: The History of Chess

The game of chess may be hundreds of years old, but Coach Jay can bring you up to speed in around half an hour! We did this video last week as a Kickstarter Live stream, but we had a number of people asking if we could post it to YouTube so they could share it.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to embed the YouTube video here, so just click on the image below and it'll take you right to the video!

Oh, and only one week left! Don't forget to tell a friend! :)

Seriously, when we reach out to new backers, we keep hearing that they heard about Coach Jay's Chess Academy from another parent. We couldn't have reached our goal without you guys telling your friends and family and letting them know how CHESS can change a child's life!

Thank you for your support. We're humbled and grateful!

CHECK you later!

Coach Jay's Chess Academy Featured on The Funding Chest Podcast
over 6 years ago – Thu, Oct 05, 2017 at 02:32:47 PM

Hey everyone, Kyle here...

I wanted to let you guys know about a great podcast that I've been listening to called The Funding Chest. It's a podcast where the hosts, Jonathan and Francis, pick a few Kickstarter campaigns each week to talk about and this week's episode was all about products for kids--so I was thrilled to hear them mention Coach Jay's Chess Academy!

It's a podcast I've been listening to for awhile (I listen to MANY podcasts while at work) and highly recommend to anyone interested in Kickstarter. And I would have said that even if they'd never mentioned our campaign!

If you want to check them out, here is how to find the show:
